THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

In the New Testament, Jesus referred to himself and his followers as the “Light of the World.“ The Matthew and John’s Gospels both mention the term. It shares many similarities with Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount parables of Salt and Light and Lamp beneath a Bushel.

I am the light of the world, Jesus remarked when he addressed the crowd once more. The light of life will be with anyone who follows me, so they’ll never walk in the dark. -John 8:12

The Word “I Am the Light of the World” in Biblical Context

The sun rises every day to warm, illuminate, and support earth’s growth. Long before smartphones, the moon and stars were the only sources of illumination for the night. When we walk into a dark room, we grab for the light switch, and we rely on the knowledge we have accumulated to illuminate our lives. Every nook and cranny of our lives and selves are penetrated by light, whether it be literal illumination or warmth that can be felt. The word “phos” comes from the Greek word meaning to make manifest, evident, exposed, or clear.

Any vegetation needs light to grow, and light makes the human spirit more clear. Christ was there when the world was created. The ability to fully illumine His creation rests with the Author of Light. When Jesus claims to be the Light of the world, He is expressing both the outward manifestation of His Father’s existence and presence as well as the inner residence of the Holy Spirit, which enables us to know our Father and follow Jesus. A boat needs navigational lights at night to prevent hitting the earth, the beach, or other boats. Light keeps things from wandering aimlessly. At night, captains follow lighthouses and blinking channel markers.

Even though GPS coordinates now direct ships, the captain and crew must still be able to navigate by the stars, buoys, and lights in the event of an electrical failure. A lack of planning could prove fatal.

We rely on the Light in the same way that ships follow lights to assure their safety.

Through his death, Jesus dispelled the gloom and paved the road for us. The Holy Spirit’s illumination of God’s Word assists us in remembering and understanding when we need His insight to guide us. In our daily lives, prayer serves as both a lifeboat and a lighthouse. It is an open channel of communication that was not available to Old Testament believers.

The Light of the World How Jesus Is

We have access to the Father because of Christ. When the Light touches us, our viewpoint brightens. We are able to hold on to the slivers of light that pierce the darkness because we are illuminated by the Creator.

According to Jon Bloom, “Jesus’s works made who he was patently evident. His works shone, and they still shine.” Jesus illuminates the sin-filled crevices in our hearts.

The Holy Spirit’s conviction leads us to repentance after it has been made clear. As He sanctifies our hearts to reflect His light, we become wiser.

What message was Jesus trying to convey to his audience?

In God’s Not Afraid of the Dark, Marshal Legal asks, “How do we live with any hope as we sink in all of this darkness? Satan himself is leading an entire system of spiritual darkness, carried out by hordes of demons, and influencing every part of earth.

Without Jesus, we are self-absorbed and self-centered. We exhaust ourselves and our abilities and are then overcome by the inherent darkness in our hearts. In their natural state, no one has “a nice heart.” We are all fallible. Jesus came that we can be filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Through the insight of His word and our relationship with Him, God’s loving embrace illuminates those who are living in darkness.

For many of us, no darkness is more daunting than our own, says Segal, because we see so much of ourselves in the darkness around us – our flaws, our worries, our brokenness, and our sin.

How Should Christians Understand Jesus as the Light of the World?

Things get better for Adam. The future, however, is incredibly bright in Christ.

Jesus provides us the ability to recognize our identity in Him. The only thing that can reveal who we are and lead us properly through life is the light of the world. It takes more than just following Jesus to follow him. It entails accepting him as he is. become so enamored with him that you embrace Him.

Light resembles freedom. When we walk with our Creator, we are completely open to the world. Walking in the light entails appreciating our uniqueness when we give up our selfish priorities in favor of His view of love. Think about how He is aware of each and every one of us before we take our first breath. Let it sink in that He carried each of our names to the cross as the light of the world.

What we don’t know is known by the Light of the World. We can miss many turns on the path to a full and brilliantly abundant life because we are so intent on getting where we are headed.

His light simply vanquishes every shadow with something more powerful; it doesn’t make the darkness any less dark.

Do Christians Also Have a Duty to Shine a Light on the World?

What makes us so special? Our visible, public works on the outside reveal who we are and whose we are, according to Jon Bloom.
