John Piper says, “The hatred of God is the manifestation of what the father’s problem was. The sins of the fathers are punished in the children by becoming the children’s own sin.”

Repeated sins obviously have generational repercussions. In the words above, God assured Moses that He would punish the guilty.

Why would He want His children to keep up bad practices that wouldn’t make them truly happy or satisfied? God gave His only Son to save us because He loves the world so much. (John 3:16) He is patient and kind, and He made a way for us to escape the sinful curse that all human beings are doomed to bear.

“The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to wrath, abounding in love and faithfulness, sustaining love to thousands, and forgiving iniquity, rebellion, and transgression,” he proclaimed as he passed in front of Moses. However, he does not spare the guilty; he punishes the offspring of the parents to the third and fourth generations for their sin. ESV Exodus 34:6-7

What are Generational Curses?

Generational curses are traits that are passed down from one generation to the next, or they might be strongholds and habits that we ourselves develop and find it difficult to escape from. Adultery, sexual abuse, drug addiction, eating disorders, and pornography.

These blatantly immoral practices can all be viewed as generational curses. Hank Hanegraaff says, “A generational curse is the dark side of behavior carried down through the generations. It is when we inherit a sinful habitat belief that adversely affects our lives or others around us.

Less controversial generational practices can be equally harmful and entrapping. The harmful roots of sinful strongholds can include laziness, gossip, self-pity, condemnation and criticism, stubbornness, and excessive spending.

A wise mentor once told me that the likelihood that I was deeply troubled by a particular habit in someone else was because I had at least a tint of it myself.

Or perhaps I sat completely immersed in it by myself.

God warns us in numerous ways! We shouldn’t hold our parents or grandparents responsible for our actions. We all have the chance to embrace freedom in Christ, even if we share the same tendencies.

How Are Generational Curses Broken?

Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation as a result. The old is gone, and the new has here. Second Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)

On the cross, Jesus overcame all curses. The moment we give our cursed chains to Him, they are broken. We must put in the effort to change our sinful ways, but in Christ, we have been adopted into a new family—family! God’s We are delivered from the death-related curse of sin by the power of the cross.

All have the opportunity to experience freedom in Christ since He came for all. In his article for The Gospel Coalition, Isaac Makashinyi stated that “generational curses are a fact of human nature and learned by example and influence. Consequences, not curses, are passed down down the generations.

Every curse has already been broken if we are in Christ. Consequences for sin and disobedience will always exist. God is always just and good. God is a good God always. He punishes His children like a good father.

In spite of the agonizing barrage of our poor and rebellious choices, our Father gently leads us. However, we are not responsible for the sins of others. The person who sins shall die, according to Ezekiel 18:20. The parent’s guilt is not shared by the child, nor is the child’s guilt shared by the parent.

Jesus is everything to us. His deed of salvation was part of God’s original design. Every day, the Spirit faithfully prods us and tells us that we are loved. “It won’t be because you miraculously managed to avoid the mistakes made by earlier generations that you dwell eternally in fellowship with the Heavenly Father.
